Crocodile feeding on zebra 2Crocodiles having a feast on Zebra cadavers in Mara river.
In the Mara River, six or seven large crocodiles gather around a dead zebra killed one hour before by one of their number as it was attempting to cross the river. Their movements around the carcass are deliberate, not frantic.
Their cooperative feeding behavior is clearly seen in this photo. One of them seizes the belly of the zebra and spins on its own axis while the other crocodiles hold the body of the zebra. As a result the spinning crocodile rips a hole in the zebra’s belly.
The open belly of the zebra allows the other crocodiles to get at the internal organs. The blood is a sign that, some crocodiles are feeding under water
Here is a crocodile surfacing with the liver hanging from its jaws.
Having emptied the body of its organs the crocodiles proceed to dismember it. Here is a large crocodile spinning with the zebra head in its mouth.
Then the large crocodile swallows the head whole while the others continue ripping pieces from the zebra under water until it is all gone.
